09-ingredients-for-success

It seems like every few weeks I have a conversation either in business or in my personal life that includes me hearing a statement similar to this, “Joe is so talented. It’s no wonder he’s been successful. I mean look at the talents he was blessed with. If I had those talents, I could be successful too.”

First off, most talents aren’t bestowed upon a person, their grown, their earned, line upon line and step by step. Just ask Daniel Coyle, author of The Talent Code. My business partner recently spoke highly of this book so I’ve added it to my reading list (you might want to as well).

Today’s chart depicts my humble opinion that success has little to do with talent. It has less to do with what you’ve got or have been given and a has a lot more to do with what you’re willing to give.

Ingredients for Success

In the chart, I’ve included some of the ingredients for success: vision, ambition, action, being on time, work ethic, energy, effort, attitude, passion, body language, being coachable, doing extra, being flexible, focus, and integrity.

What do these ingredients have in common? They all require zero talent. Zero, zilch, zip, nada. That’s incredibly liberating and exciting to think about. Take a super talented entrepreneur who lacks these ingredients and stack him/her up against an entrepreneur who has mediocre talent but brings the ingredients above every day. If they were competitors in the same industry, who would win? Who would find the most success? Undoubtedly the second entrepreneur.

The really great news is, when we bring these ingredients to work with us every day, we can accelerate the development of industry skills and talents. Once we’ve obtained said talents, and we continue to couple them with the ingredients for success, we rapidly shorten our path to success.

What can you do today, what can you bring today, to be successful?
